Mountain Peace

When people ask me why I chose Geneva for my masters program, my response is always the same.  "It is a French speaking city with a great university and easy access to the mountains."  Why is it that the mountains always call me back to them?  What do I find amongst the snow covered peaks that I can't find anywhere else?  Peace.

In a world buzzing with noise, obligation, and an endless stream of thoughts it is crucial to find a place where you can be perfectly still.  For me that place is the mountains.  When I am skiing down an empty slope hearing nothing but the wind whistle through my helmet and the crunch of the snow, everything else fades into the distance.  I think only about the next turn I will make.  I am truly living for only this moment.  It is so rare to be 100% present.  Our minds love to take us to the past and the future.  Trying to analyze things that went wrong in the past and control what will happen in the future.  At the end of the day, these thoughts do nothing but take us away from what we are living now.  One of the easiest ways for me to turn them all off is to strap on my skis and soar down the mountain.

The world always seems a bit more colorful after a day in the mountains.  I carry the peace that I find into the week remembering how small my worries felt in the presence of the stunning peaks.  I am in awe of their beauty and grateful for their uncontrollable power.  It reminds me how little control I have and how much beauty can come from letting go.
